The No Surrender Charitable Trust has recently agreed to fund a Research Fellowship at University College Hospital London into Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer. This will be done under the auspices of the Hepto-Biliaric Department under the guidance of Professor Massimo Malago, Head of General Surgical Services at University College London Hospitals. Professor Malago is also the Consultant Transplant Surgeon, Director Live Donor / Liver Transplantation Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead and Professor of Surgery - Vice Chairman Department of Surgery - UCL Division of Surgical &Interventional Sciences, University College Medical School, University of London. Professors Malago's team of Consultant Surgeons and Doctors are some of the most respected and talented medical people in the world today.

Research is normally funded in 3 ways, by government aid, by industry, or by private (normally charitable) funding. At this moment in time the Government is putting very little into research, Industry directs research towards its own agenda and products, leaving the only independent way to make sensible innovative progress is with the help of private funding.

The Fellowship will be undertaken by a Junior Surgeon as part of his academic training and will involve full time research in the laboratory under the guidance of Senior Research staff into the early detection and control of Pancreatic Cancer. There has been very little research into this disease although it is the most complex and virile of cancers. The survival rate for 1 year is only 1% for those diagnosed with the disease. The disease has normally progressed beyond reasonable cure before it is detected which is why the survival rate is so low.

Research is a vital part of a consultants training and papers will be written and published worldwide on the findings and hopefully this will prove to be significant. We are informed that the initial research being undertaken is already showing encouraging results that need further exploration. Any positive findings should also relate to other cancers so pancreatic cancer is not the only disease that will benefit.

The research Fellowship lasts for a 2 year period and the Trust hope that it can fund at least 2 fellows. i.e. a commitment for 4 years and ensure that the research is continuous for this period.

The Surgeon once fully qualified will always be recognised as a Fellow of the "The Jason Boas Fellowship" and this will have a significant bearing on their qualifications and will carry Jason's name wherever their careers take them.

The No Surrender Charitable Trust's other focus is the provision of a web-based forum for young adult cancer sufferers; this provides a place where they can find people of their own generation who understand exactly what they are going through. This has been expanded to become a social network for anyone affected by cancer of any age, whether it being cancer itself or a family member.

Donations will go to the ongoing development of the No Surrender social network.
